News from around the world

Shagalicious

A new beer, "Shag Beer" is going to be banned because it outrageously links alcohol and sex with its marketing slogan "Fancy a Shag?"

And no other alcohol advertising campaign has ever linked sex with their products? come on, what a crock. Sex sells, we all know it. What about the Cougars ad campaign- plaster the logo on a little itty bitty tshirt and get a buxom blond to squeeze her huge jugs in it. That's a sure fire way to get people to remember your brand name. So its not refering to sex in the same direct way Shag beer is, but its still using sex to sell!

However, using sex to sell products is cheesy and overdone. The best ad campaign in the whole wide world is the Carlton Draught ads... "MADE FROM BEER". you can view the 2 tv ads here.
my favourite line is,

"Driven around, by horses.... MORE HORSES!" hehehhehe

Anyways, before this beer becomes extinct, we are hopefully going to try and get some for friday afternoon drinks... because yes i do fancy a shag.

Russell the Slighty Aggressive Bear

Oh Russ, what have you done? Gone and lashed out at some poor concierge for giving you attitude. Tsk tsk.

Who would have thought a lost Late Show sketch would one day ring so true? For Russell Crowe most certainly is... SHIRTY the Slightly Aggressive Bear. You can see the clip when Shirty's identity is revealed on this site.

Schapadlock

This morning on Sunrise, there was a brief article about some guy wanting to name a brand of luggage after Schapelle Corby, called Corby's bags or something. I didn't hear the whole thing and I can't find any articles online about it, however they were discussing whether it was insensitive or not. I guess the arguement for would be that he's using Schapelle's notoriety to promote luggage security - to prevent this kind of thing from happening to anyone else. That said, I think its pretty insensitive... kinda like the Schapadlock email that's been going around.

you should buy a few cartons and after a year or so of it being unavailable put them onto ebay and sell them for a fortune like you can with Duff beer nowdays... but to be honest beer in my house won't last long enough to be worth anything but a hangover the next day.... and yours too I would suggest

I thought 'Fancy a Shag' was kind of amusing. But beer and sex are pretty much always linked. The fact that some group wants to ban the product because of it's advertising isn't really new.

In the States, they were all outraged about these Molson Canadian Beer commercials that had this spokesperson named 'Joe' who claimed 'I... AM... CANADIAN!' for being... get this... too anti-American.

Sure, it pokes fun at the 'mis-understanding' that the average American has about the average Canadian, but apparently it's considered 'Anti-American' and was therefor banned.

So basicly, patriotism for any country than america, is bannable.
Well, yes, it is un-american...it's canadian. WTF?!?
THIS is exactly why I can stand America.
Ignorance, descrimination and brainwashing is NOT something to be proud of.

    Hi Rhiannon,
long time lurker first time poster.
    Re:"Shirty"
If I am correct (and I think I am)"Shirty" was only played by Russell Crowe for that one sketch which was done at the time of him starring in the ultra violent flick "Romper Stomper"

Shirty was Mick Molloy for most episodes - check out the body language sometime, it's Micks.

Let me get this right, first Strongblade repeats a 5 year old urban legend as a true story and gets it all wrong i might add.
    http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/joesrant.htm

Then Carrot believes the legend and proclaims she cant stand America. So given what we know of the legend from the snopes link (that it was an all Canadian affair with no cries of ban it from America) did eveyone else laugh their asses off like me when they read her last sentance and I quote "Ignorance, descrimination and brainwashing is NOT something to be proud of." ..gawd I love ironic humor

Well, I sit corrected. I had never heard it was an urban myth, simply as something that happened all those years ago. The source of the information, people I know that had heard the same tale, had always been reliable in their information.

Coupled with my personal experiences at the time with discussions about whether it was anti-American with Americans, I had no reason to believe it was not true.

As for Carrot's last line, I happen to agree with it. I deal with Americans that fit that description every day. There is an inexhaustible supply, apparently.

Did I laugh? No. And most non-Americans wouldn't. The global view of America is that it is self-centered, selfish and ignorant of anything beyond it's own borders.

That is how the rest of the world sees America. Whether right or wrong.

well, it seemed plausable. My view of America stood well before I saw that ad and read that comment. So I fully stand by my statements, wether what provoked me writting them here was valid or not.

Americas attitudes towards the rest of the world and even their own people really upsets me.

    I LOVE SNOPES!!!!!!

Bolverk, i never said russell played Shirty all the time.

I said: "Who would have thought a lost Late Show sketch would one day ring so true?"

i didn't really even think about who played him in most episodes (but it probably is Mick)...

i just brought up that ONE episode ("lost episode"- ie it didn't make it onto the Champagne Comedy DVD. it was in the special features)

So yea, thanks, but I'm not a complete retard.

Buffy & Angel DVDs - I bought Buffy seasons 1-3 off an Ebay store years ago. They are region 1. The rest I bought at HMV or JB Hi Fi over the years (actual stores) and are Region 4.

Carrot when you say Americas attitude are you talking about the American government or the American people or are you treating them as one and the same? When you say its attitude towards its own people really upsets you is there something specific you're talking about or was it a general statement?

I have more questions I'd like to ask but I'll wait till I see if anyone tells me to shut the hell up with all the questions.

a-non-e-mouse, i wont tell you to shut up, and if anyone does i'll kick their ass coz its my fucking site/comments
    hehehhehe

look i agree, carrot made a bit of a generalisation... we all have done that at one stage or another. i think she was meaning more the government and a percentage of the population, NOT EVERYONE.
i think she means the attitude of some people, but not everyone.

Hi Rhi, thanks for saying I can ask questions, I think I ran Carrot off by asking them tho. Maybe she thought I was trying to start an arguement or something but I'm not. I was going to ask her if she's ever been to the states and if not then I was going to suggest that she get with you and you both plan to come over here for a vacation so you can see how us kooky Americans live while the dollar is still down so it'll be kinda cheap for you. Actually you only need to visit one city over here and that is New Orleans, if you get away from all the tourists areas and party with the people who live there you won't want to leave, at least not until a hurricane forms in the Gulf then you'll want to get the hell outta there. There's lots to see over here but the people make that city a fun place to visit. Uhh, I think I better quit typing now because I'm sounding like a tourist agent or something. hehe

Oh yeah I was going to ask Carrot where she got her news from because I'm looking for a good unbiased news source that doesn't have any ties to american news agencies, I've totally lost faith in the freedom of press over here.
