I am.... Static Electricity Girl

fuck its started again for another year. as soon as it gets cold i turn into a human static electricity conducter. it happens when i'm in a cold grocery store- if i touch someone, i often zap them. come winter time, and i zap everyone and myself ALL THE FUCKING TIME. i've even had the heater on for a while, so its not that cold inside here. i got up and grab a drink of water, and touched the metal tap....ZAP!
i got up before to have a cigarette outside, and grabbed the metal handle of the balcony door....ZAP!
i came over to my laptop on the table and touched the scroll pad....ZAP!

i'm wearing ugg boots, so its not like i'm rubbing my socks against carpet or anything. i wrote a huge post about it years ago, and a bunch of people responded saying they too seemed to conduct alot of static electricity.

i dont even know what static electricity is. i mean, what is it REALLY? what causing it? what do i get it only in cold weather? maybe its cold DRY weather (as opposed to the hot humid weather we have the rest of the year) i think i have my entertainment for the night. TO THE GOOGLEMOBILE!

Hey Rhi.. I feel your pain.

I'm the same way. I just tell people that during the fall and winter that I'm a Human Tesla Coil.

The worst is when I'll go to touch or kiss my girlfriend and ZAP! she gets a shock, gets mad, and blames me... as if I did it on purpose!

I don't get it either. I just hope that all the damn zapping doesn't modify my DNA and give me cancer years from now.

    From Captain Happy Pants

As the Capt is a big time Triple J listener I can tell you people ask Dr Karl this all the time and he says that it is because of dry skin in the cold weather it makes it easier to make static electricity, if you moisturise (sic) big time than you will cut down the amount of static you produce...

I get crazy amounts of static in this sort of weather.

It's funny when I pat my cat and I can feel that I'm zapping him at the same time. I wonder what he thinks of it :P

but captain, i DO moisturize. compulsively. always. more than most people. so that means i would be MORE static-y if i didn't. argh

I often zap myself painfully in the supermarket when I reach for something on a (presumably metal) shelf.

As a fellow shockee, do you find that the strength of the zap can differ for no particular reason? Sometimes it's really painful and I spend the rest of my shopping trip swearing to myself and trying to poke things off shelves with a packet of spaghetti rather than risk another shock.

Oh and I moisturize too, so you can scrap that idea!! My worst shocks happened a few months ago, I'm not looking forward to shopping now that my hair is showing telltale signs of static electricity :(
