DAMNIT just my bloody luck, i found out one of my dad's favourite movies and its OUT OF PRINT!! argh, i thought even steve might be able to get it somehow. but its been out of print for a year supposedly, so it doesn't look like there is any chance of getting it. the movie is Bladerunner. i never knew dad liked that movie so much, but on the weekend his girlfriend said he's mentioned it a few times. I've been looking on ebay but it seems like all i can find is Region 1 dvds, not region 4 ones. I guess I could buy one of those anyway, and then trying to find a crack for their dvd player (so it can play multiple region dvds)...meh still got a few more days til his birthday anyway.

I have a copy of that Bladerunner DVD (Region 1 though) but the quality of the DVD is piss-poor. It was rushed into production and the print they used is very scratchy amd filled with artifacting. A very poor DVD. I'm almost too embarrassed to admit I own a copy of this travesty to a classic movie.
If any movie deserves the high-definition digitally remastered 3 disc exlusive director's cut collector's special edition treatment, it's this movie.
So maybe it's a blessing in disguise, Rhi. Perhaps this year is out, but if it's been out of print for a year, there is still hope a truly worthy DVD set for this movie may come out. And then no need to plan for the next birthday (or maybe Christmas...)

The Region 1 version isn't THAT bad. They have a new version that's due out in the Fall.
If you really want it, here's what I recommend (provided you have access to a dvd burner).
Get the region 1 disc, get MacTheRipper from MacUpdate.com, pop the disc in your iBook, tell Apple DVD Player to fuck off, then launch the ripper.
It will take a minute or two to scan and disc, after which you can just click go and let it rip the dvd to your hard drive, removing the region coding and macrovision in the process.
You can then take those files and burn them to dvd using Toast in Data mode (in advanced options, choose DVD-ROM). Just drop the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders from your hd into toast.
Should work fine. For dvd's bigger than 4.5gig, you'll need something like DVD2OneX to recompress the movie to fit a single-layer dvd.

didn't say region 1 was BAD, its just not the region for australia.
i dont have a dvd burner on my ibook or my pc.
i dont really want to give my dad a burnt dvd for his birthday. i guess i'll just have to hang onto that idea for another year.
it was released in 1982, so maybe they will have a 25th anniversary edition out in 2007.
mike, you have heard there is a new version due out in the fall? where did you hear that from?
thanks for you help.

Rhi, another poster said the quality of the region 1 Blade Runner dvd was bad. I know it's not the proper region for Australia. ;)
I agree that a burnt dvd is tacky, but I was thinking you'd give him the R1 disc as well as the burnt copy. I'd say it probably isn't worth the hassle, especially since you don't have ready access to a dvd burner.
As far as the release date of a new SE, it has been delayed since 2001 due to all sorts of legal issues. I can't find the post that said they were planning to release it in the fall of 2005, though I did find one that mentioned "the first half of 2005" here: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormillarc21.html (scroll down to the 7/21/04 post)

If your Father has a computer, he may be able to watch the DVD there. Question is, do you get the theatrical release or the Director's Cut?
